Artist words
"Sivert Andersson, originally from Norway, was executed on 4 May 1858 in Lit next to the old country road, just south of the bridge abutment at Högbroforsen, now Högfors. The execution site is on a pine grove where an area has been cleared of forest and a grave has been dug. Next to the grave stood the gallows and a hut had also been built there where the executioner, whose name was Endre Jonssen, hid until the actual execution. A lace yard in two tiers was placed around the place of execution. From the surrounding villages and farms, a man from each food team had been summoned. The men were ordered to bring a pointed sturgeon of a specified length, two different lengths were specified. The execution yard consisted of two ranks, the men in the front rank probably stood with one knee on the ground and directed their staves obliquely inwards towards the execution site, the rear ranks stood up and they also probably directed their staves obliquely inwards. A lace yard was a common occurrence at executions. Sivert Andersson had been sentenced to death for the robbery and murder of a colleague. The change amounted to around SEK 40. After the murder, Sivert Andersson went to Lit where he was arrested at his fiancee's house. The trial was short and simple. Sivert Andersson admitted his deed with great remorse. The punishment was death, by beheading. Two huts made of rice had been erected at the execution site, one for Sivert Andersson and one for the executioner, Endre Jonssen, who after a death sentence for theft had been spared life in return for taking on the job as the Reich's executioner. Two priests as well as the sheriff and guards were also present as well as many spectators from the areas around Lit. Both men and women. Accompanied by the two priests, one on each side of him, Sivert Andersson finally emerged from his rice hut. The priests were the parish priest in Lit and the commissioner in Häggenås. Sivert Andersson falls to his knees and says a prayer next to the gallows, he was calm and collected. When he has finished his prayer, he calmly rests his head on the gallows. The executioner (the executioner) steps forward, he is wearing his robe of office, a red ankle-length one. He lifts his car and slashes, and Sivert Andersson's head is severed from his body. Death was immediate. The sentence was executed. The corpse was placed in the grave, (probably with the head between the legs as was a common tradition after an execution), the grave was shoveled again and a small cross made of material from a young pine tree was erected over the grave. The execution site is still there. The forest has grown over the area that was cleared at the time of the execution, but there is a small clearing and there is a memorial in the form of logs and a cross. The exact location of the grave is unknown today."
