"Norrlandsskenet" poster by Henric Nilsson. Northern lights in Luleå on a cold winter evening. The northern lights (Aurora borealis) occur when charged particles (usually electrons) from the sun (solar wind) fall towards the uppermost part of the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of 100-400 km. The electrons are affected by the Earth's magnetic field and therefore hit the atmosphere along an oval around each magnetic pole, the so-called auroral oval in the northern hemisphere. With increased solar activity and magnetic storms, the oval widens and then shifts towards lower latitudes and the polar lights become more intense at the same time. It is at such times that you can see the northern lights in southern Sweden and sometimes even more southerly. The Northern Lights zone is an area of the Earth where the average occurrence of the Northern Lights is greatest. It stretches through northernmost Scandinavia across Iceland, the southern tip of Greenland, through northern Canada and Alaska, and along the north coast of Siberia. A similar zone for the Southern Lights exists in the Southern Hemisphere.
