Artist words

"As grown up in Majorna this view of Röda Sten and Eriksbergskranen framed by the bridge Älvsborgsbron in the port is one of the most common symbols of Gothenburg. During childhood a place for play and fascinating stories about the history of the stone, not least the tale about how the stone in times passed came to get the colour giving rise to its name. The stories differ but the one we were captured by while climbing on the rock we as children found to be so big and exciting was the one about the seaman whose blood coloured it deep red at his tragic death on his way back to his beloved who was patiently waiting for his return from war. In eternal longing with her heart filled with a never ending love she waited, constantly looking out over the ocean, symbolised by the statue called The woman by the ocean crowning Sjömanstornet. Badly injured the seaman fought to his last breath to be reunited with his beloved and for one last time get to hold her in his arms and tell her of his eternal live but upon arrival at the port of Gothenburg the ship sank. With his last efforts the seaman managed to get to land but he then died next to the rock. Due to his strong pure love his blood coloured the entire rock red as a symbol to his beloved for her to see from her viewing point over the ocean to bring her the understanding about his strive to return to her as well as solace in the knowledge of this proof of his great love. Oh, how beautiful and horrifyingly tragic we found the story of the destiny of this loving couple and the blood coloured rock. But besides this captivative tale we breathlessly listened to as kids, Röda Sten was a popular point for gatherings in different situations also in the teens just as it in adult age and the area is and remains a dear place in Gothenburg not only for us grown up in the area but for visitors from all over the world."
